The State Department has commented on US Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s extensive references to Greece during a speech on far-left terrorism.
The American Secretary of State had recently mentioned the death of Vaya Nestora, in the context of an international conference at the State Department on political terrorism.
Marco Rubio used examples of far-left political terrorism from various parts of the world, including the United States, as he argued, “far-left terrorism is a global threat.”
According to the State Department, “through our joint response to far-left and anarchist terrorism,” Greece and the United States have forged “a long-standing security partnership that is among the strongest internationally.”
The reference to the joint losses that the two countries have suffered from terrorism underlines, as ERTnews points out, both the seriousness of the threat and the value of their international cooperation.

In addition, Rubio emphasized that many governments worldwide, including that of the United States, had not adequately assessed the threat of far-left political terrorism.
On the contrary, “Greece showed great determination and effectiveness in dealing with it, even when other countries underestimated it”, thus becoming “a leading force in the field of counter-terrorism and an example to be followed”.
Finally, Rubio’s reference to “November 17” was made because the United States “never forgets its representatives and employees who have lost their lives” overseas in the line of duty, the State Department commented.
